Woman charged with manslaughter after death of 11-year-old girl in east London

A woman has been charged following the death of an 11-year-old-girl in a Shadwell home nearly two years ago.

Schoolgirl Fatiha Sabrin was found unresponsive at a residential property in Sutton Street on December 11, 2021. She was rushed to hospital where she was declared dead later the same day,

Murder detectives launched an investigation and Jesmin Akter, 33, of Sutton Street, E1, was charged on Friday, July 28 with manslaughter and importing a regulated substance.

She will appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court on August 22.

At the time of the Fatiha’s death schoolmates at Buttercup Primary in Shadwell said they had been left “devastated by her empty seat in class”.

Sa Ahmad, whose wife discovered Fatiha at the flat, said: “Fatiha is a brilliant girl and had lots of dreams become a doctor to serve the UK and the community.

“She has a bright future but she is no more. She was a great writer. She wrote many poems and articles.”

A Met spokesperson said: “Fatiha’s family have been informed of this development and they continue be supporting by family liaison officers.

“Criminal proceedings against this defendant are active and she has the right to a fair trial.

“It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice proceedings.”
