A man was killed and a woman was seriously injured in a crash Friday in northwest suburban Woodstock.
A 2009 Mitsubishi Galant was westbound on Nelson Road about 1 p.m. when it veered into the eastbound lanes, left the road and hit a tree east of Deep Cut Road, according to the McHenry County sheriff’s office.
The passenger, a 44-year-old man from Capron in Boone County, was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said. His identity has not been released.
The driver, 45-year-old Shannon Velmont of Wonder Lake, had to be extricated from the wreck and was airlifted to Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford with serious injuries, according to the sheriff’s office. She was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving on a revoked license and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Both occupants of the Mitsubishi were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and both airbags deployed, the sheriff’s office said. The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County coroner’s office.
