Woman charged with drunk and dangerous driving after talented footballer left in coma

A woman was charged with being double the drink driving limit after a crash which left a talented young footballer and cricketer fighting for his life.

Alex Moffitt, 17, was walking along Kenyons Lane, near the junction with Dodds Lane in Maghull , with friends when he was struck by a grey Honda CR-V car at around 1.50am on March 23.

The teenager suffered a fractured skull, broken foot and two small bleeds on the brain and was taken to  The Walton Centre  for neurosurgery.

Now Sarah Hogg, 50, is due to appear in South Sefton Magistrates' Court tomorrow to face one charge of causing serious injury to Alex by dangerous driving, and one of driving with excess alcohol.

According to the charges, Hogg, of Meadow Lane in Maghull, provided a breathalyzer sample containing 70 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath - whereas the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

According to a Justgiving page , set up by Alex's dad Philip Moffitt to raise money for The Walton Centre Charity, Alex was placed into an induced coma for two weeks after the collision.

Alex, a member of Maghull Youth Under 18s cricket team, Maghull Football Club and St Helens Town FC, is understood to be progressing well with his recovery.

His dad Philip tweeted in October: "In the accident, Alex damaged his knee.

"Been in surgery for three and a half hours today. Doctor just came out and said it went like a dream.

"Fingers crosses he’ll be playing again next year. Couldn’t be happier, onwards and upwards Alex deserves some good news."

Alex's beloved Everton FC have also helped towards his recovery , with Philip revealing that Blues hero Graham Stuart had been to visit his son in hospital with a bag of goodies including a first team shirt.

The club also offered the teenager a VIP visit to Finch Farm or Goodison Park.
