A woman has been charged over an audacious £4.2 million diamond heist at one of Mayfair’s top jewellers.

Lulu Lakatos, 59, was allegedly part of a crew of thieves who targeted Boodles on New Bond Street in March 2016, snatching seven jewels from under the noses of staff.

It is thought to be the single biggest theft from a shop in British history.

During the heist, which has been likened to an Ocean’s Eleven-style scam, the diamonds were stolen and replaced with pebbles.

Staff did not realise the jewels, including a heart-shaped diamond worth £2.2 million, had been switched until after the thieves had fled the country.

Lakatos was extradited from France to London on Thursday to face the charge of conspiracy to steal.

The 59-year-old, will appear via video link at Westminster Magistrates’ Court later on Friday.
