Woman charged over murder of man in tiny Victorian town

Rebecca Payne, 41, faced the Mildura Magistrates Court charged with one count of murder.

A 41-year-old woman appeared in the Mildura Magistrates Court today charged with the murder of a 68-year-old man whose body was found in a small Victorian town.

The man's body was found at a property on Cregan Street in Walpeup — more than 450 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 130km south of Mildura —about 9:30am on Friday, police said.

According to a charge sheet, it is alleged that Rebecca Payne, of Walpeup, murdered the man last week sometime between Monday, August 31, and Friday, September 4.

The court was told the cause of the man's death was still being analysed and that it would likely take eight to 10 weeks for that analysis to be completed.

Ms Payne, who was arrested last Friday and charged on Saturday, did not speak during the short hearing.

Ms Payne did not apply for bail and she will reappear in court on January 12.

Prosecutors have until December 1 to file a brief of evidence against her.
