Woman charged 'extortionate' amount for coffee in Dublin Airport Starbucks as well as add-on charge for something that's usually free

A woman was charged a whopping price after a coffee chain in Dublin Airport knocked a few extra quid onto the bill for something that's generally free in their other stores.

Jovi Mullen said she paid over €5 for her latte after the airport Starbucks knocked a bit extra on for soy milk.

The Waterford woman, who is lactose-intolerant, was charged a total of €5.15 for her the medium beverage, which included add-on prices for vanilla syrup (60c) and soy milk (60c).

And to add insult to non-diary, they got her name wrong as well.

She tweeted: "Just paid over €5 for one coffee at @StarbucksIE at @DublinAirport , 60c charge for soy milk! Not my fault I'm allergic to dairy, also hi I'm Jode."

Speaking to Dublin Live she said none of her local chains in Waterford or in the UK where she works have ever charged her extra - and she doesn't feel she should be paying for having an allergy.

She said: "It's my usual order. I am [lactose intolerant] so I always have to have soy milk.

"It's a shame you have to pay extra for something you have no control over."

A spokesperson for Starbucks told Dublin Live stores may vary in price to reflect "the cost of doing business in that location".

They said: “We are committed to offering great value and service to all customers, whether they are visiting us on the high street, at a drive-thru or at the airport.

"Like many retailers, product prices may vary slightly depending on location, which reflects the cost of doing business in that location.

"We also work with a number of licensed business partners who set their own prices in line with competition law.”
