Woman charged after 'fake covid nurse' took OAP's urine sample then stole cash

A woman has been arrested and charged after a crook pretended to be a covid nurse while stealing cash from an OAP.

The fraudster targeted the 85-year-old victim at her home in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire on Saturday morning.

The woman claimed to be a district nurse from a local GP surgery who was sent to carry out a Covid-19 test.

She allegedly took a swab from the pensioner's nose and mouth with a cotton bud before asking for a urine sample after the pensioner told her of a bladder issue.

Having gone to the bathroom, the OAP came downstairs to discover £90 was allegedly missing from her purse - she then contacted police.

Police, along with South Lanarkshire Council, launched an appeal to trace the thief.

A woman has been arrested and charged in connection with alleged fraud, related to this offence.

The 45-year-old was also arrested and charged for another alleged offence of a similar nature, that also took place in the Blantyre area.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "You might have seen our witness appeal regarding an incident which occurred in Blantyre where an elderly victim was targeted by a female claiming to be a district nurse, who was there to carry out a routine health check.

"The suspect asked the victim for a urine sample and was left alone in the home for a short period of time when she allegedly stole money from the victim's purse.

"We can confirm that on May 18 a 45-year-old female was arrested and charged with alleged fraud for this offence and one other of a similar nature, also committed in the Blantyre area.

"We'd like to commend the work of the officers involved for their investigation and identification of the female."
