A woman recently had her truck damaged by a hit-and-run driver, but she was able to figure out who did it thanks to her security cameras. The woman, who goes by Kylie on TikTok, posted a video that now has more than 259,500 views. The video shows what happened and includes the moment she talked to the person who hit her truck.
According to Motor 1, Kylie’s security footage shows her truck sitting on a street in her neighborhood. A red sports car drives by and hits the side of her truck. The driver slows down for a second after hitting the vehicle but then keeps going without stopping. The driver did not get out of the car or leave a note with their contact information.
After looking at the video, Kylie realized the person who hit her truck was actually her neighbor. When she went to talk to him about it, he asked her, “How did you know it was me?” She told him she had it all on video. His question pretty much showed that he didn’t expect getting caught.
Security cameras are worth every penny for situations like this
There are important steps to follow when your parked car gets hit. If your parked car is hit, first check for witnesses or nearby cameras and avoid moving the vehicle. Take photos of the damage and call the police so a report can be filed. Then, contact your insurance company to let them know what happened.
If you can identify the person who hit your car, their insurance should cover the repairs. If the driver is unknown or uninsured, you may need to use your own coverage. Without insurance or proof, you could be responsible for paying for the repairs yourself.
When someone hits a car and drives away, they are breaking the law. This can lead to serious trouble including having to pay fines, facing criminal charges, and losing their driver’s license. The punishment gets worse if someone got hurt or if there was a lot of damage. But even when it is just damage to a car with no injuries, driving away from the scene is still against the law and can get you charged with a crime.
Kylie shared in the comments that she reached out to both her insurance company and the police. But she said the police did not want to make a report because she had already found out who hit her truck on her own.
One person who watched her video on TikTok told her to “File a police report hit and run. Then put a restraining order on him. Sue him even if your insurance pays your eligible for full payment of damages. Sue him in small claims court with the police report.”
After Kylie confronted her neighbor, he started calling her over and over again. This made her nervous and uncomfortable. He left her a voice message saying he had contacted his insurance company to start a claim for both of their cars.
Most people told Kylie she should stop talking to her neighbor directly. They said she should let the insurance companies and police handle everything from now on. Some hit-and-run situations can become dangerous, so it is usually better to let trained professionals deal with these problems instead of trying to solve them yourself.
