Woman catches midnight visitor in her garden on CCTV

A woman is urging people to be vigilant after catching a visitor in her garden on camera.

Christine Rimmer, who lives in Southport, says it isn't the first time she has spotted an uninvited creature in her garden during the night.

Posting on a neighbourhood app, she wrote: "This is another new visitor.

"From the size, I think it may be an autumn juvenile.

"Hedgehogs can have two litters in a year. The first litter will usually be fine, but sometimes the second litter can struggle.

"I've been in touch with my friend - she runs a hedgehog hospital/rescue, and this one has plenty of time yet to put on enough weight for hibernation.

"This photo was taken by the camera I have by my back door."

As Bonfire Night approaches, she says, it is important to keep an eye out for hedgehogs.

Christine continued: "People should only build bonfires during the day, and check them very carefully before lighting them."

The RSPCA says hedgehogs are a "gardener's friend" - as they eat beetles, caterpillars and worms.

Its guidance says: "Supplementing a hedgehog's natural diet by leaving out food and fresh water is a great way to encourage local hogs into your garden.

"Leave out foods like tinned dog or cat food and cat biscuits or crushed dog biscuits. Good quality, meaty specialist hedgehog food can be bought from wildlife food suppliers.

"Never feed hedgehogs milk as it can cause diarrhoea; instead provide plain, fresh water in a shallow bowl. Bread should also be avoided as it's low in nutrients."
