Woman calls police on 'handmaid' about to jump off roof - but it's not as it seems

If we thought someone was about to jump from the top of a building, we'd be terrified.

This was the situation one woman recently found herself in after spotting something unusual in New York.

Casey McCormick was working at her desk when she saw what looked like a woman dressed as a handmaid (from The Handmaid's Tale) standing on the edge of a rooftop.

Not wanting to waste any time, the 30-year-old, who works for Popsugar, took action in the moment and called the local police.

However when an officer arrived on the scene, all was not as it seemed.

The so-called 'handmaid', who was thought to be someone wearing a red cloak and white bonnet, actually turned out to be a large red parasol on an outdoor dining table.

Relieved that there was no one on the roof, the young woman decided to share the dramatic but ultimately rather funny ordeal on Twitter .

She shared a picture of her initial view of the rooftop, drawing on an arrow to show the umbrella. Alongside this there was a snap of a policeman holding the umbrella and a text from him reading: "It's an umbrella. All safe."

Her tweet quickly went viral with more than 388,000 likes and over 113,000 retweets.

Thousands also commented on the post - including Netflix US who made a Handmaid's Tale joke.

They wrote: "Ofumbrella".

Others praised Casey for her initiative.

One person said: "Better safe than sorry!"

Another responded: "You did the right thing and the result is... hysterical."

A third added: "Appreciate people like you regardless, out here looking out for handmaids AND umbrellas."
