Woman buying £1 bananas accidentally pays £1,599

A woman who nipped into Marks and Spencer to pick up some bananas on her way to work was accidentally charged £1,599.

Cymbre Barnes, from London, says the bananas should have cost £1 and the whole shopping around £4.

But she used Apple Pay to cover the bill - without checking the total - and instantly found she had been hugely overcharged.

Cymbre says the branch where she bought the bananas couldn't refund her, and she had to walk 45 minutes to the next nearest M&S, reports The Mirror.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Miss Barnes, 28, said: "I was in a rush before work so when I got to self-checkout I used contactless and it was instant.

"I did a double-take when I saw the screen but by then my receipt was already being printed. It was too late."

Miss Barnes was told the till in the shop was broken, so she'd have to go to another store for a refund.

She ended up walking 45 minutes.

A spokesperson for Marks & Spencer told the publication that this was an "isolated payment error".

They added that they had since apologised to the customer and offered compensation.

The Mirror has contacted M&S for further comment.
