Woman broke ribs after bullying ex pushed her down the stairs

A woman suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung after she was pushed down the stairs by her ex-boyfriend.

Shaun Byott, of Lowerson Road in Clubmoor, attacked his former partner in the early hours following a drunken night in the pub. Her face was also left "covered in blood" following the assault.

Liverpool Crown Court heard on Tuesday how victim Kayleigh Slater initially called 999 at around 11pm on October 28 last year to report the 33-year-old defendant was drunk in the pub and was being "verbally abusive to her". She also told the police she was "concerned it would kick off when she got home".

Christopher Hopkins, prosecuting, described how Ms Slater than placed a second emergency call shortly before 1.30am on October 29 in which she alleged she had been assaulted by Byott. Officers attended her house in Warrington and found her with facial injuries and her "face covered in blood".

She stated she had been drinking with him in the pub, but returned earlier than him. Ms Slater sustained two broken ribs, a perforated and collapsed lung, "significant" facial bruising and a wound to her ear during the incident but declined to assist Cheshire Police any further.

Byott subsequently confessed that, "following a brief struggle on the landing", he had pushed Ms Slater and caused her to fall down the stairs. His criminal record includes a conviction for assault occasioning actual bodily harm in 2011, for which the dad-of-four received a suspended prison sentence.

Jim Smith, defending, told the court that his client had "self medicated" for mental health issues with cannabis in the past. He added: "The defendant is sorry. The incident was a spontaneous and short-lived assault. His last conviction for violence was over 12 years ago.

"The defendant is someone who has struggled with his mental health. He is someone who wants to, on his release, be a more dependable partner in future relationships and someone who his children can look up to.

Byott admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm and possession of cannabis, in relation to a small quantity of the class B drug discovered upon his arrest. Appearing via video link to HMP Liverpool, he was jailed for nine months.

Forfeiture and destruction of the cannabis was also ordered. Sentencing, Judge David Potter said: "You have a previous conviction for assault in 2011 and you have more recent convictions, but none of a similar seriousness.

"There have been significant breaks in the last 11 years of your offending. You did not, I am sure, intend for the injuries to be inflicted on her.

"I accept you are now remorseful for your offence upon Ms Slater. You have a desperation upon your release to be more of a role model to your four children, who you effectively abandoned by your behaviour over the course of the last few months."
