Woman breaks legs after 10ft jump into submerged rocks in sea

A woman who tombstoned into the sea broke her legs after hitting submerged rocks.

The 29-year-old was airlifted to hospital after jumping at Winspit, near Swanage, Dorset, on Saturday afternoon.

After plummeting into the rocks from the 10ft drop, she broke both her legs and suffered cuts after misjudging her leap into the water.

Shortly after 4.30pm, Swanage Coastguard and lifeboat teams were called out to rescue her.

The Coastguard called the air ambulance after the woman was found to be unable to move her legs, who then airlifted her to hospital for treatment.

The woman was taken to Poole Hospital and is believed to have not suffered serious or life-threatening injuries.

Swanage Coastguard says an off duty doctors was on hand to check the woman over for any spinal injuries, and thankfully none were found.

Before being flown to hospital she was given gas and air pain relief.

After landing awkwardly on her knees, she was hauled out of the water by friends before a member of the public ran for over a mile to get phone signal.

A coastguard helicopter was scrambled to the remote location to winch her from the cliffs and fly her to Poole Hospital.

The Swanage lifeboat also attended and gave the woman gas and air pain relief while the helicopter was en route.
