Woman branded 'terrible' by her neighbours after asking them to stop dog barking

Living next to neighbours that constantly make noise is never an easy thing, but one woman has become embroiled in a feud with the people next door to her after she asked them to keep the noise down.

The woman explained her neighbours have a dog that barks "for 15-45 minutes a time" multiple times a day and has been disrupting her and her partner's peace and quiet for the past six months.

But when she went to "kindly" ask her neighbours if they could do anything about their dog's constant barking, she was slammed for complaining and called a "terrible neighbour" herself.

In the title of a post on Reddit, she claimed: "Tried to kindly ask my neighbour if they can do anything about their dog constantly barking. She got very offended and basically told me we're terrible neighbours."

And she then explained in the post itself: "Moved into a new house in October. For the last six months, we've tried to ignore the next-door neighbour's dog, who barks for 15-45 minutes at a time, every day, multiple times a day, including often during quiet hours, [which are] 11pm-6am.

"Today, I finally gathered up the nerve to kindly ask them if there's anything they can do about the noise. When I went over, their kid answered and so I said I'd be back in a bit when their parents are home. About 20 minutes later, one of them knocked on my door."

The woman, who appeared to be from the US, then shared the conversation she had with the mum who lives next door to her, which started with her politely asking if there was any way they can keep their dog quiet.

She said: "Hey, so ... I had come over to ask if maybe there's anything you can do about your dog barking? It's pretty persistent and we've really tried to tune it out since we moved in, but it's just become too much to simply tune out."

She claimed the woman was "instantly offended" by her request, and insisted she was the first person to ever complain about her dog in over 20 years of living at the property.

The neighbour also accused the woman of being a bad neighbour herself by not shovelling the snow off of her driveway and the pavement outside her house, as she fumed: "I've lived in this house for 20 years and NEVER had anyone complain about a dog. He's inside from 11pm to 7am. He has a doggy door during the day to get out. I can't do anything about that.

"And you know what? You don't even shovel your sidewalk."

The woman claimed she tried to keep the conversation civil and after her neighbour eventually told her she would "try to do better at night", the woman responded: "Thank you, I really appreciate that."

But her comment only annoyed her neighbour more, as she sarcastically said: "I'm sure you do" before starting to storm off.

The woman insisted she wasn't trying to "come off harshly", to which the neighbour asked what she was supposed to do about her dog, and the woman said: "I really don't know, I can't tell you how to control your dog, we're just asking that you please keep the noise down."

According to the woman, the conversation ended there as her neighbour stormed off back to her own house.

Commenters on the post were firmly on the woman's side though, as many of them sympathised with how irritating the sound of a dog constantly barking can be.

One person said: "Yeah no that's not okay. I have a small, very yappy dog. Yes, she barks but I don't allow it to go on and on for more than a minute or two. The longest was when I was stuck on the toilet for a few minutes and she saw a squirrel. That's not acceptable from them."

As another wrote: "Nothing you can do. Maybe can file a noise complaint? The main thing is to never engage again - that's what I've learned from having bad neighbours."
