Woman baffled after blue water flows out of her tap as she asks if it's safe

A woman has been left baffled after seeing blue water flowing out of her tap with authorities launching an investigation into the unusual issue.

On Monday, Twitter user Ntombi M shared a picture and video of her baffling experience on social media from Johannesburg, South Africa.

The video shows her filling up a glass of water, which does not come out clear but bright blue.

She said: "The little water coming out of our taps RN [right now]. It’s BLLLUUUEEEEE. There’s some coming out now again and they’re still blue, just lighter in colour…

"Can anyone at least let us know what this blue colour is in the water? Is it normal or safe? We are still water shedding in our area btw."

The incident happened on Monday while most areas were under water restrictions.

A power failure at the Eikenhof pump station the day before resulted in the depletion of reservoir levels, leaving some at a 0 per cent storage level.

The bulk water supplier had already been struggling with low levels at its reservoirs since the first week of January.

Some residents in the city have been without a constant water supply for two days, which added to the shock and surprise of the blue water.

The Gauteng province, where Johannesburg is, is facing a water supply crisis due to continued rolling blackouts and high temperatures. Some say they do not see an end in sight.

Johannesburg Water said predicted cooler weather over the next few days will assist in lowering demand, which affects the maintenance of capacity.

One Twitter user wrote to the Mayor: "Am in Coronationville and we have no water. It comes around 11pm then gone by 5am.

"How do you propose we live? The time we try to boil what we stored from buckets there’s load shedding. Can you at least take it around 7am. Annoyed."

A spokesperson for the water utility firm, Johannesburg Water, said it suspects the blue water was contaminated by copper in the building, but samples had been taken for testing, according to local reports.

The results are expected in 24 hours after the samples have been tested, Puleng Mopeli is quoted as saying.

The affected resident told IOL news site that the blue water eventually stopped coming out.
