NAKHON SI THAMMARAT: A female university student was seriously injured when her car was hit by a passenger train at an unmanned railway crossing in Thung Song district on Friday evening.

The accident occurred in tambon Tham Yai, said Pol Capt Jittinan Suwanchatree, an investigation officer at Thung Song police station.

Police and rescue workers arriving at the scene found a badly damaged Isuzu pickup truck with Nakhon Si Thammarat licence plates near the railway track.

Pickup truck driver Salisa Boonkua, a 24-year-of student of Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya, Nakhon Si Thammarat Campus, was lying unconsciously with serious head injuries outside the vehicle. She was rushed to Thung Song Hospital.

Train driver Phumphong Wiphonchai, 45, told police that the train was leaving Sungai Kolok station for Surat Thani station. When the train was approaching Thung Song station, the pickup truck suddenly went through the crossing, leading to the crash, he said.

According to investigators, Ms Salisa was thrown out of the vehicle during the crash as she was not wearing the seat belt.

The student was driving from the campus and was on the way to her house, police said.

The train was not damaged and continued the trip.
