Woman badly hurt in fire at south Manchester flat has died

A woman badly hurt in a fire at a flat in Levenshulme has died, police have confirmed.

The woman, who was in her 70s, was rushed to hospital after a blaze broke out at her ground floor property on Broom Lane on Monday afternoon (March 22).

Neighbours raced to help her as smoke billowed out from the windows of the flat just after 3pm.

She was taken to hospital having suffered critical injuries.

The woman has now sadly died, police have said.

There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death and a file has been passed to the coroner, the force added.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) is investigating the incident.

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: "Police and the fire service were called on Monday 22 March at about 3.30pm to reports of a fire on Broom Lane, Levenshulme.

"A woman in her 70s was taken to hospital but sadly later died.

"There are no suspicious circumstances and a file has been passed to the coroner.

"GMFRS continue to investigate the cause of the fire."

Firefighters rushed to Broom Lane when a blaze broke out at around 3.20pm.

An air ambulance was seen leaving the area at around 4.30pm.

The front door of the flat was damaged and the downstairs windows were smashed during the incident.

Smoke damage was also visible inside and outside the house.

Broom Lane was cordoned off to traffic and pedestrians while emergency crews worked to bring the fire under control and assist the casualty.

The cordon was lifted at around 5pm but police officers remained in place outside the property.
