Woman awarded €20,000 after being sexually harassed by sleazy supermarket worker

A sleazy supermarket worker kissed a female colleague on the neck against her will, pinned her against a fridge and made lewd comments about schoolgirls.

The pervert also pinched her and made sexually suggestive comments.

She was awarded €20,000 for the sickening campaign of harassment and sexual harassment.

At the Workplace Relations Commission, Adjudication Officer Gaye Cunningham ordered the unnamed retailer to compensate her for the distress and harassment.

She said: “I am satisfied these incidents were extremely serious in the impact they had on her personally and her working environment.”

Ms Cunningham added the supermarket “failed to put appropriate measures in place to stop this from occurring or to reverse its effects”.

She also ordered all managers should receive appropriate training on harassment and sexual harassment and bullying and harassment.

The deli worker began working for the supermarket in May 2018 and alleged verbal and physical sexual harassment began a month later on an almost daily basis.

She testified the man made sexual comments about young girls who came into the shop and when asked to stop as they were clearly children, he said they looked old enough.

She said a manager witnessed some of the behaviour and when asked to intervene, the manager laughed and told the man to stop as the deli worker was from Limerick and she would stab him.

The woman made a formal complaint concerning the sexual harassment and a second female employee alleged the man had touched her inappropriately.

The man was moved to the store but then went on sick leave.

She was not told what was happening with her complaint and said she was left with no option but to hand in her notice last January.

The deli worker stated the man’s behaviour created an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating and offensive environment.
