Woman awarded £180,000 from her ex in back payment for 25 years of housework

A woman has been awarded £180,000 by a judge after the court decided she should be compensated for 25 years of unpaid housework she did when she was married. Ivana Moral told the court she stayed at home, cleaned, cared for her husband and raised two daughters over 25 years - ensuring the house was "always impeccable".

Judge Laura Ruiz Alaminos sitting at a court in Malaga, Spain, ordered Ivana'a ex-husband to pay her 204,624.86 euros - around £182,000 - based on the minimum wage of the work carried, reports Nuis Diario.

Her ex must also pay her an ongoing pension of £444 a month as well as paying £356 and £533 to his two daughters, now aged 20 and 14.

Ivana said she had not been able to work during the marriage, only getting money from her husband as she undertook housework and looked after the family with no payment. She said she had been unable to build a career.

Ivana said she had signed a type of pre-nup before the marriage in 1995, allowing her husband to keep all his money.

The court heard that in part thanks to his wife taking care of all the household and family duties 'for free', the husband was able to build a successful gym business that allowed him to buy a Porsche Cayenne, a Range Rover 4×4 and a number of BMW motorbikes.

He also bought a 70-hectare olive oil farm, which was valued at €4m (£3,565,000).

At age 16 the couple's eldest daughter had to start working to pay for her education.

Ivana asked for a divorce in 2020 and was initially awarded half of their house but nothing more.

Marta Fuentes, Ivana's lawyer, said: “This ruling represents the labour of all the women in the shadows and who, without a doubt, constitute a fundamental support in personal, marital, and familiar terms during years and years so that the ex-husband could develop his professional career and a rise in wealth which at the moment of separation could not share."

Ivana told the i: "My daughters and I were left with nothing after all these years of putting all my time, energy and love in the family.

"I was supporting my husband in his work and in the family as a mother and a father.
