Woman avoids jail after Burnbank Centre assault that left victim with blood running from head

A woman has avoided prison for her part in an attack on a man in front of shocked Hamilton shoppers.

Charlene Watson admitted taking part in the assault on an unidentified man at the Burnbank Centre on August 23.

Last month William Hilston, 29, and John McCrory, 29, were jailed for 14 months and 19 months respectively.

They admitted involvement in the assault and McCrory also pleaded guilty to a charge of having a knife in Semple Street, Hamilton, on September 17.

Watson, 36, who had been held in custody ahead of sentencing, was placed under supervision for 18 months.

She will be tagged for four months, meaning she can’t leave her home in Elmbank Crescent, Hamilton, between 7pm and 7am each day.

Wendy McAdam, prosecuting, said the attack happened shortly after 5pm when the centre was still quite busy.

She told the court: “Police got an anonymous call reporting that several persons were fighting.

“Officers arrived and saw the victim, with blood running from the top of his head, walking nearby.

“They tried to catch up with him to speak, but he ran off and they were unable to trace him.”

CCTV showed Hilston trying to hit the man with a bottle, then chasing him and forcing him to the ground.

Hilston then kicked him repeatedly on the body while he lay on the ground and struck him on the head with the bottle.

McCrory joined in the attack, kicking the victim repeatedly on the head and body before hitting him on the head with a bottle which smashed.

Ms McAdam said Watson kicked the prostrate man repeatedly on the head and body, and struck him with a mobile phone.

Defence agents said that, although police didn’t trace the victim, he was known to the accused and there had been bad blood between them.
