Woman attacked while jogging in Arlington Heights

Nov. 15--A woman was attacked by a man while jogging Friday night in northwest suburban Arlington Heights, authorities said.

The woman was running near the intersection of Valley Lane and Windsor Drive near Lake Arlington around 5:05 p.m. when a man dressed in dark clothes started to jog next to her, trying to engage her in a conversation, according to a statement from the Arlington Heights Police Department.

The woman tried to ignore him, but the man "grabbed her by the waist and spun her around," the statement said. The jogger struggled with the man and was able to break free to call the police.

The man, described as a 35-year-old Hispanic man who is about 6 feet tall, ran away. The woman was not injured.

The attack is the third similar incident that occurred near Lake Arlington over the past 14 months, according to the statement. The previous two incidents, in which female joggers were also battered, happened in September and October of 2013, the statement said.

The first attack was on Sept. 26, 2013, around 6 a.m., and the second one was on Oct. 11, 2013, around 5:30 a.m.

Arlington Heights officials urge residents to be aware of their surroundings while jogging or walking outside. People are discouraged from running alone in secluded areas during hours of darkness or wearing headphones while running.

Arlington Heights Police Department is investigating the three incidents and is seeking witnesses who can help identify the suspect.

Anyone with information should call 847-368-5343.
