Woman 'attacked by man' near Lime Street as passers-by dial 999

A woman was reportedly assaulted by a man near to Lime Street Station as passers-by called 999.

Emergency services were called to Back Lime Street behind Great Charlotte Street in the city centre on Monday to reports of the assault.

The man is said to have attacked the woman before making off from the scene at around 10.30pm.

The victim was found with bruising to her forehead and shoulder which required hospital treatment.

Witnesses described the suspect as having a Liverpool accent and wearing a grey top, but CCTV enquiries have so far proved unsuccessful in identifying him.

In a statement, Merseyside Police said: "Detectives are appealing for information following the reported assault of a woman in Liverpool City Centre last night, Monday 5 July.

"At around 10.30pm, emergency services were called to Back Lime Street, behind Great Charlotte Street, to reports that a woman was being assaulted by a man.

"The man made off and the victim was found to have bruising to her forehead and shoulder and was treated at hospital.

"Witnesses describe the suspect as having a Liverpool accent and wearing a grey top however CCTV enquiries have so far proved negative in identifying the man."

Detective Inspector Alyson Keenan said: “At this stage we are keen to speak to anyone who saw this incident and has yet to come forward, so we can confirm exactly what happened and ensure that the incident is fully investigated.

“This will have been a distressing incident to experience and we’re keen to get all the information we can and put the person responsible before the courts. Members of the public did exactly the right thing in alerting emergency services straight away.”
