Woman assaulted in own home after she was accused of stealing children's bikes

A woman curled up in her bathroom to protect herself after a man kicked in her door and assaulted her.

The terrifying incident stemmed from Anton Howell's partner accusing the victim of stealing her children's bikes which she denied.

Nottingham Crown Court heard there was an altercation between the ladies - attempts to throw punches and hair pulled by both of them in Latham Street, Bulwell - before the victim retreated to her home.

Once inside she sought the safety of her bathroom but heard a man's voice shouting "where is the ******* bitch".

After kicking the door in, so it was virtually hanging off its hinges, Howell ventured inside and got into the bathroom.

The woman felt a blow to her head which may have been caused by a mirror coming off the wall.

Howell, a chef, pleaded guilty to assault, causing bodily harm, to the woman on April 19 after 5.30pm.

The court heard he accepted he went to the address to challenge her about what happened with the bikes.

Statements from other witnesses seemed to say the victim was the aggressor and she had stomped towards a car with the defendant's partner inside.

The court also heard the victim leaned into the car and grabbed the woman's hair and pulled it, starting the incident which caused Howell to lose his temper.

He appreciated his behaviour was appalling, he should not have entered the property or behaved in the way he did.

Judge Timothy Spencer QC, who sentenced Howell, said he is a hardworking man and a father and is clearly devoted to his partner.

"What sort of example is this?" he asked him. "What are you doing?"

He said Howell was clearly convinced his partner was the victim and the other woman was the villain.

But he said "here the answer is not going around kicking the door in and hitting her".

Since April the judge acknowledged quite a lot had happened in Howell's life. He had been in court for drugs offences.

He has been making positive progress on a court order.

The judge said: "This has to be it, Anton Howell. There will be no more chances after this. No more reckless hot-headed behaviour like this. Put this behind you".

He imposed a restraining order for five years; 12 months in prison, suspended for two years for the assault, and two months concurrently, also suspended, for causing criminal damage.

The 32-year-old, of Hilcot Drive, Aspley, was ordered to pay £300 costs and a victim surcharge.
