Woman asks for help as boyfriend won't stop digging 'tunnel' outside home

A woman has sought advice online after her boyfriend's hobby has begun taking its toll on their relationship.

She said her boyfriend spends "all his free time" digging a huge tunnel on some property he inherited. He's spent about a year on it, she says, and it is "remarkably deep".

Posting on Reddit, the worried woman said she now has some concerns for both his physical and mental health. She is scared he might "dig too deep" and come into difficulty.

Part of her post said: "He's spent roughly a year on [the tunnel], and it's evident. The front of the thing is deep, wide, well put together. At the front, which is the only part that I've seen, he's got cement, beams, electric lights, even chairs and a small table.

"I haven't gone into it but it looked like the quality severely dropped as the tunnel went further, mostly becoming open dirt with some wood beams holding it up. My biggest concern is his safety, I'm really worried that he's going to dig too deep and it'll collapse on him or something. I've tried voicing my concerns to him, but he just laughs it off and assures me that he'll be fine."

Aside from her safety concerns, she's worried that he "doesn't really have a social life" because of the tunnel project. She continued: "I'm pretty much the only person he still talks to outside of his job, and he doesn't go out and do anything any more. It used to be that he'd occasionally head out and do some digging on the weekends, but now he spends almost all of his free time out there.

"He still comes home, but he barely spends any time with me, and I know that he isn't doing anything but digging that damn hole in the ground." She also said she fears it's not good for his mental health. Finishing her post, she added: "I just don't know what to do".

After a screenshot of the post was shared on Twitter, many people shared their opinions on her predicament. One man said: "He isn't hurting anybody. Let him dig, or better show up next time with a shovel and say how far we getting today baby?"

Another said: "Make sure this unusual behaviour is safe physically and mentally. Your concerns are valid". A third wrote: "I think he just likes digging but I'm more worried he's neglecting his girlfriend. He needs to take her concerns seriously".
