A woman was on Tuesday arrested and charged with possession of protected wildlife after she was caught in possession of 13 species of wild birds without permission.
Krittini Akkharasi, a resident of Ban Don village in Wan Yai district of the northeastern province of Mukdahan, was detained during a raid on her house in which 17 wild birds belonging to 13 protected species were seized, said Sathit Phisaisawat, head of Mukdahan's provincial wildlife inspection checkpoint.
The authorities were acting on a tip-off, Mr Sathit said, adding that she had now been handed over to Wan Yai police.
Meanwhile, an injured serow was rescued in Tha Sae district of Chumphon on Tuesday.
The wounded animal was found lying on a bridge, said veterinarian Phichai Phokrasang.
Residents who found the animal said they believed it had fallen off the back of a white pickup truck which they suspected was being driven by a wildlife smuggling gang, he said.
The incident was later reported to local police after the animal was rescued.
In Chachoengsao's Tha Takiap district, a baby elephant was found dead near a pond in a rubber plantation on Monday evening.
The exact cause of its death and whether it was a male or female has not been established, according to a Facebook post by the National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department on Tuesday.
