Woman charged with murder over Point Cook house fire was not known to victims, police say

The young family had moved into the property less than three weeks ago.

A 46-year-old woman facing three charges of murder and arson causing death following a house fire in Point Cook in Melbourne's west was not known to the young family who died in the blaze, police say.

Jenny Hayes of Fawkner was remanded in custody on Thursday night after being charged with the deaths of Abigail Forrest, 19, three-week-old Ivy Forrest and Inderpal Singh, aged 28.

The court heard the relationship between the accused and the deceased had not yet been disclosed.

But on Friday morning, police said Ms Hayes was not previously known to the young family.

Ms Hayes was held in Richmond Police Station and was due to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court for a committal hearing next March.

The court heard it was her first time in custody.

Police earlier said in a statement that Ms Hayes was arrested by Arson and Explosives Squad detectives in Airport West on Thursday morning.

Emergency services were called to the property about 3:40am Wednesday following reports of a house fire that had spread to neighbouring residences.

The townhouse was destroyed by the blaze and two other properties were also damaged.

Arson chemists forensically examined the property late into the night on Wednesday.

Police earlier said they were not looking for anyone else in relation to the matter, but urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
