Woman arrested on suspicion of drink driving after Ford Fiesta plunges from road in Bolton and lands upside down in stream

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a car plunged 15 feet into a stream.

Barrow Bridge Road in Bolton was taped off for several hours while the emergency services dealt with the incident on Thursday evening.

Police and specialist fire crews rushed to the scene at about 8.30pm.

Moments earlier, the white Ford Fiesta had left the road and crashed through a metal fence before falling into Dean Brook.

Barrow Bridge Road was sealed off while the emergency services dealt with the incident (GMP)

Pictures taken at the scene show the vehicle lying upside down in the shallow water.

The occupants had managed to escape by the time the emergency services arrived at the rural spot.

It is not believed that anyone suffered any injuries.

After providing a positive breath sample to police, the driver was then arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

Following the crash, people were asked to avoid the area, just north of Moss Bank Park.

In a post on Facebook on Thursday evening, GMP Bolton North said: "The driver of the Fiesta involved in the RTC in Barrow Bridge has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after she provided a positive breath sample.

"Please avoid the area while we recover the vehicle."

Watch manager Andrew Kopicki, from Bolton North fire station, said: "We were called to Barrow Bridge Road, in Bolton, at about 8.30pm on Thursday.

"We received information that a vehicle had left the road for reasons currently being investigated by the police.

"After falling 15 feet, it came to rest upside down in around a foot of moving water.

"The occupants were upon arrival, but we used our water rescue PPE to search the vehicle and the surrounding area to male sure there were no further casualties.

"We were at the scene for about 40 minutes."
