Woman arrested for wearing tiny string bikini to the beach

A female tourist was arrested and fined after wearing a revealing string bikini while on holiday.

Lin Tzu Ting, 26, sparked controversy after donning a barely-there two-piece while visiting the newly-refurbished Boracay Island Resort in the Philippines.

The authorities were led to the Taiwanese traveller after photos of her wearing the skimpy swimwear went viral on social media a day earlier.

Shocked locals reportedly called the police after she was spotted wearing the bikini for the second day, with Boracay Inter-Agency Management and Rehabilitation Group (BIAMRG) and the Philippine National Police detaining the woman on Thursday afternoon.

It is understood that when the authorities arrived they made her change into a T-shirt and shorts before arresting her and bundling her into a van.

She was later fined PHP2,500 (around £39) for a “display of erotic and lewd picture.”

Local media reports that the woman had previously been warned by resort management that her bikini may be deemed inappropriate, but she dismissed their advice, stating the choice of swimwear was "a form of art” and ''personal expression".

The municipality police chief, Jess Baylon, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer  the woman was photographed by residents and tourists, but that the woman’s boyfriend claimed that the “string bikini is normal in their country".

“It was literally a string,” she said.

“But their customs and traditions are not the same in our country. They have to respect our culture and tradition, and our proper decorum,” she added.

The couple flew home on Friday afternoon, and authorities are now urging hotel and resort owners to have their own guidelines to advise tourists on the island about local custom, regulations and culture.
