Woman arrested for drug driving after Hengrove roundabout crash leaves biker in hospital

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after a crash in South Bristol that has seriously injured a motorcyclist.

The woman, who has not yet been named by police, was arrested by police attending reports of a road traffic collision on the Hengrove Way roundabout just after 4pm this afternoon, Tuesday, December 28.

The crash occurred between the driver of a car and a motorcyclist, on the exit off the roundabout onto the eastbound Hengrove Way dual carriageway, the main A4174 South Bristol ring road.

The road was closed immediately by police, as paramedics rushed to treat the motorcyclist, and he has been taken to hospital with what Avon and Somerset Police described as ‘serious injuries’.

Police said they arrested a woman on suspicion of drug driving.

“We were called to attend Hartcliffe roundabout at just after 4pm today (Tuesday 28 December) following a collision between a car and a motorcycle,” confirmed the police spokesperson.

“The motorcyclist has suffered serious injuries and he’s been taken to hospital.

“Officers have arrested a 31-year-old woman on suspicion of driving with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit, and she has been taken into custody.

“The road currently remains closed in one direction – from Hartcliffe roundabout to the junction with Hengrove Leisure Park – while enquiries continue at the scene,” he added.

The eastbound side of the ring road is currently - as of 6.45pm on Tuesday, December 28 - still closed, with buses being diverted through Inns Court and Knowle West. For latest updates on this ongoing situation, click here.
