Woman arrested by gardai over Cork murder of baby girl Santina Cawley released

The woman arrested in connection with murder of Cork toddler Santina Cawley has been released.

Gardai arrested the woman, in her 30s, on Monday.

However, officers on Tuesday released her without charge.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions and investigations are ongoing.

Tragic Santina, two, died in Cork city after she was found in a critical condition during the early hours of Friday morning, July 5.

She was found at an apartment in the Elderwood complex on Boreenmanna Road on the south side of Cork city. Her father Mike raised the alarm at 4.50am on Friday.

Santina was rushed to hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Following the completion of her post mortem by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster, gardai launched a murder investigation.

Her heartbroken uncle took to social media at the weekend to post a photo of the two-year-old, saying: "Rip beautiful angel. Cruel world. Live life to the full and have no regrets."

Meanwhile, gardai investigating her death are believed to have taken over 50 witness statements so far, mostly from residents at the Elderwood apartment complex.

Gardai who rushed to the scene - responding to reports of noise and a disturbance - discovered Santina lying unconscious on the living room floor of a third-floor apartment.

One of the first people on the scene was a trained advance paramedic, who worked frantically to revive the two-year-old before the first ambulance crew arrived.

An initial examination showed she had suffered bone fractures, cuts and head injuries. A large amount of blood was also present at the scene.

It is believed little Santina had been sleeping over at the apartment, currently rented to a female friend of her father. Her mother was not present.
