A woman has been taken to hospital following an incident which saw armed police close off part of a Wigan housing estate.

Officers were called to an address off Poplar Avenue, between Ashton-in-Makerfield and Garswood, at around 11.30am today (Wednesday).

Witnesses spotted armed police officers at a cordon close to a junction with Cedar Grove and a spokesperson for Merseyside Police explained that they were called after reports that a member of the emergency services had been threatened with a knife.

The road remained closed for several hours until around 1.30pm.

A 45-year-old woman was arrested at the scene and then taken to hospital.
