A woman has been charged after a memorial for Captain Sir Tom Moore was allegedly defaced at Thistley Meadow in Hatton, south Derbyshire, police said.

A 21-year-old was arrested after a video posted on social media showed human faeces being poured on top of the life-sized memorial for the WWII veteran.

The video attracted condemnation online, with the firm who gave the memorial to Thistley Meadow saying it would work with police after the alleged vandalism on Friday.

Derbyshire Constabulary said that Madeleine Budd, from Manchester, was arrested by the Metropolitan Police on their behalf on Sunday and has now been charged with criminal damage.

She is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday October 4.

Captain Tom died after contracting Covid-19 and pneumonia in February 2021.

The WWII veteran inspired the nation when he set out to walk around his garden 100 times to raise £1,000 for the National Health Service during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic. He achieved his aim more than 30,000 times over, raising over £32 million.

The late Queen was among the thousands to pay tribute to the man labelled a “Great British hero”.

The Duke of Cambridge described him as a “one-man fundraising machine”, while Matt Hancock, the then health secretary, said he was “an inspiration to us all”.
