A 24-year-old woman has been arrested following a crash that killed a man waiting at a bus stop in Southwark.
Officers in an unmarked police car pursued a car speeding along Southwark Bridge Road at 5.40am on Sunday.
As officers attempted to stop it, the vehicle crashed into a bus stop at the junction of Great Suffolk Street and Southwark Bridge Road.
Emergency services treated a 57-year-old man, who was waiting at the bus stop, but despite their efforts he died at the scene.
His next of kin have been informed.
The woman, believed to have been in the car, was taken to hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening or life changing.
The road was closed for several hours while investigations took place, with local buses diverted.
All road closures have now been lifted.
The Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have been informed, as is standard in incidents involving serious injury or death.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who has died and the officers and other members of the emergency services who attended this incident.”
Witnesses or anyone with dashcam or mobile footage of the crash are urged to contact police on 101, quoting CAD 1535/25MAY.
