Woman arrested after image of baby 'being strangled' is shared on social media

A woman has been arrested and a child has been placed in care after an image of a baby "being strangled" by its mother was shared on social media.

The worrying image was shared on social media on Saturday night. NorthWalesLive reports they understand it was sent to a man believed to be the child's estranged father.

The image appears to show something wrapped around the neck of a distressed baby and appears to be a screen shot taken from a video on the social media site Snapchat.

Within minutes of the post beginning to circulate, it provoked outrage. It is not known who reported the post - believed to have been shared on Facebook - but on Monday detectives from North Wales Police confirmed they were investigating an incident.

They said they had taken action to protect a baby, and that a woman, who NorthWalesLive understands to be from Anglesey and in her early 20s, had been held on suspicion of child cruelty.

It is understood that a child has been placed in care as a result of the force's inquiries.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: "We are aware of the incident, and the baby has been safeguarded.

"One person was arrested on suspicion of child cruelty, and released on police bail pending further investigation."
