Woman and three children killed after their car is hit by train on level crossing

A woman and three young children died after their car was hit by a train at a level crossing.

The heartbreaking collision happened in the Marne region of France on Monday morning.

The woman, who is in her 30s, a 10-year-old girl and two toddlers, aged 2, were killed instantly.

Around 30 firefighters rushed to the incident in a desperate attempt to save them.

It's believed the woman may have been the children's carer.

Four other people were injured in the horror smash.

The TER (Transport Express Regional) train, was travelling from Epernay to Reims with 24 passengers on board.

The train driver is said to be extremely distressed and "suffering from shock".

All trains in the area were suspended while authorities dealt with the collision.

French police confirmed the four occupants of the car died in the smash and said it is not yet known what they were doing on the 'well maintained' crossing.

An official investigation has been launched.
