A woman posted a TikTok video that shows her and her mother getting kicked out of a wedding ceremony. The video has been watched more than 3.7 million times. People are now talking about whether race played a part in what happened and if the wedding party handled things the right way.
The woman who posted the video goes by @damnnnndee on TikTok. She said she went to her coworker’s wedding with her mother. When they got there, everyone seemed happy to see them. They found seats and sat down to watch the ceremony. Everything seemed fine at first, but then things took a turn during the vows.
“And we were the only Black people there, so from hindsight, it looks crazy,” @damnnnndee said in her video. A wedding coordinator walked up to them and told them they needed to leave. The coordinator said they were only supposed to come to the reception part of the wedding, not the actual ceremony. When @damnnnndee’s mother said “I feel disrespected getting invited here and then I’m turned around,” the coordinator explained they were only invited to the party after the wedding, not to watch the vows.
This could have been avoided so easily
A few days later, @damnnnndee posted another video talking more about what happened. She said she understands that some couples only want family at their ceremony. But she thinks the whole thing could have been done much better.
“Even if they stopped us at the door, that might have hurt my feelings a little bit, not gonna lie. But at the end of day, it wouldn’t have been as humiliating as getting pulled from a chair,” she explained. She pointed out that there were so many chances for someone to tell them before they sat down. The coordinator could have said something when they first arrived. Someone from the wedding party could have pulled them aside quietly.
People had lots of different reactions in the comments. Some thought maybe the invitation wasn’t clear about which parts of the wedding they were invited to. Others said they think race had something to do with it because @damnnnndee and her mother were the only Black guests there. Similar to how a confrontation at a Nissan dealership over register activity went viral for poor communication, this incident shows what happens when people don’t handle awkward situations well.
@damnnnndee said she wasn’t trying to ruin anyone’s wedding or say they can’t have it however they want. But she kept saying that if someone had just talked to them earlier, none of this would have happened. “Long story short, something could have been said, none of it would have happened. It’s pretty simple, honestly,” she said in her follow-up video.
The whole thing has gotten people thinking about wedding invitations and how important it is to be clear. Most people agreed that no matter what the couple wanted, making guests get up and leave in the middle of the ceremony was embarrassing and wrong. Much like a Range Rover owner who had to visit the dealership multiple times for the same issue, sometimes small problems turn into big ones when they aren’t fixed right away.
