Woman and friends struck by 'speeding motorbike' in hit and run

A woman who had just finished a 10-hour shift at a Covid testing centre had a narrow escape when a motorbike smashed into the side of her car.

Alex Woods was leaving the test centre in St Helens, along with two passengers, when the shocking sequence of events took place.

She was turning the car right after the lights turned green, when the motorbike - being ridden by two men - allegedly travelling at speed went through a red light and smashed into her.

The Mercedes C180 car was left badly damaged, and the two men who were on the motorbike fled from the scene.

The hit-and-run happened shortly after 6pm on Monday, at the junction of Chester Lane and Farndon Avenue.

Alex, 41, from Wallasey, said: "This motorbike came screaming down Chester Lane, through a red light and went straight into me.

"We were all left shocked and shaken up. All the airbags in the car were deployed.

"There were a number of witnesses. One said one of the people on the motorbike escaped from the scene in a blue Renault Clio.

"There was no registration plate on the bike, which was all smashed up. It's thought it might have been picked up and taken to The Dream sculpture in St Helens, where it was set on fire.

"Another witness said the bike, which was thought to be stolen, had gone through six red lights and was going at about 60mph.

"My car was written off. I later needed hospital treatment for a perforated eardrum caused by the noise of the impact. My passenger in the front seat suffered injuries from the seat belt, while her partner who was in the back seat was covered in broken glass."

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We were contacted at 6.10pm on Monday, June 21, following reports of a collision involving a black motorbike and Mercedes car at Chester Lane/Farndon Avenue in St Helens.

"Two males who were on the bike left the area following the collision in the direction of The Dream.

"Damage was caused to the car but there are no reports anyone was seriously injured.

"Witness enquiries have been carried out."

Alex has now set up a fundraising page as she was not covered by her insurance for this type of incident.
