Woman and child taken to hospital after car and wagon crash near Newton Aycliffe

A woman and a child have been taken to hospital after a crash involving a car and wagon in the early hours.

Emergency services were called to the two-vehicle collision just after 6.30am on Thursday near Newton Aycliffe , County Durham.

Ambulances were sent to the scene on the A167 and helped an injured woman and child who were taken to hospital in Middlesbrough.

A spokeswoman for Durham Constabulary said: "We were called to reports of a collision between a wagon and a car at around 6.40am on the A167 at Newton Aycliffe.

"Both the female driver of the car and a child are believed to have been injured but the extent of which are unknown.

"The road was closed while we awaited recovery of the vehicles but has since reopened."

The road was closed for four hours between Rushyford and Central Avenue in Newton Aycliffe before reopening at around 10.40am.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 6.37am this morning to reports of a road traffic collision at a junction with the A167 in Newton Aycliffe.

"We dispatched eight resources including four double-crewed ambulances, three crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team and a specialist paramedic. Two patients were taken to James Cook Hospital."
