Woman and child in hospital after serious multi-vehicle crash outside Carmarthen

A woman and a young child are in a stable condition in hospital after a multi-vehicle crash on one of the busiest roads in Carmarthenshire.

The collision, which police say involved four vehicles, happened on the A48 between Carmarthen and Nantycaws at around 6.10pm on Thursday night.

Two vehicles were involved in an initial crash on the westbound stretch of the carriageway, before two further vehicles collided in the aftermath of the original incident.

Police, fire crews and ambulance crews, including a Wales Air Ambulance helicopter, were all sent to the scene.

As a result, a section of the A48 was closed for around four hours.

Police have confirmed that a woman and a young child sustained serious injuries in the crash. They were both released from one of the vehicles by fire crews using cutting equipment and taken to a hospital in Cardiff, where they remain.

They are both described as being in a stable condition.

A spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said: “We were called on Thursday, January 28, at approximately 6.15pm to reports of a road traffic accident involving two vehicles on the A48 near Carmarthen.

"We responded with one rapid response vehicle, three emergency ambulances and two vehicles of the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service. Two patients were transported to University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.”
