Woman and baby knocked to the ground during 'nasty' daytime mugging

A mum pushing her baby in a pram was punched in the head during a 'nasty' mugging which left them both on the ground.

The terrifying incident happened as the woman strolled towards Ashton Park, in Liverpool, at around 3pm on Wednesday.

The callous thief stole the mother's handbag in the assault, Liverpool Echo reports.

Merseyside Police have released a description of the man who committed the attack and said he was white, of slim build with stubble on his face.

A spokesperson for the force added that he was wearing sport shorts and a blue t-shirt at the time of the attack.

The victim fled the scene and immediately alerted authorities (LiverpoolEcho/ WS)

Arrested teen attacked police officer as he wanted to eat his £12.50 doughnuts

He left the scene in the direction of the play area of the park and towards Wirral Way and Caldy.

Chief Inspector Peter Clark, of Merseyside Police , said: “This was a particularly nasty attack involving a woman being hit on the head, causing her to fall while she was pushing her baby in a pram.

"The woman was walking along a busy road just outside the park on a beautiful sunny day and there would have been lots of witnesses around who we would ask to come forward.

"She made her way to Grange Road to alert officers.

“Luckily the woman and her baby did not suffer any injuries, although understandably, the victim was extremely distressed and shaken by the incident.

“This was a shocking attack and it is hard to believe that anyone could do this to a woman with a child in broad daylight.

"Fortunately incidents like this are rare and we are doing everything we can to locate the offender."

Enquiries are at an early stage and officers are examining CCTV from the area and speaking with witnesses to establish the full circumstances.

Officers would urge anyone who witnessed this incident or who has any information, including CCTV or dashcam footage, to contact @MerPolCC, 101 quoting ref 572 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
