Woman and baby in hospital following gas leak at house in Wigan

A woman and baby have been taken to hospital following a gas leak in Wigan.

Fire and ambulance crews were called to Devonshire Road in Atherton on Sunday evening.

A woman, said to be in her mid 30s, and an eight-month-old baby were reportedly suffering from headaches.

Firefighters cut off the gas supply while ambulance crews treated the woman and child.

They were then taken to hospital.

Crews were at the scene for around an hour-and-a-half.

It is understood gas engineers are now on site investigating the source of the leak.

A spokesman for GMFRS said: "We were called at 5.22pm to a semi-detached property on Devonshire Road in Atherton to reports of a gas leak.

"We sent three crews from Atheton, Hindley and Leigh.

"Two casualties - a lady in her mid 30s and an eight-month-old baby - were suffering from headaches.

"They were treated at the scene by colleagues from the ambulance service before being taken to hospital.

"Firefighters switched the gas supply off and used specialist equipment to check gas levels."
