Woman allegedly choked and stabbed near outback highway

A 31-year-old man, who allegedly choked a woman to the point of unconsciousness and stabbed her "repeatedly", will face court in Alice Springs.

NT Police allege the man stopped the 28-year-old victim about 11pm on Saturday when she was walking near the North Stuart Highway with a male friend.

It is alleged the man got out of his vehicle and physically assaulted the woman, before choking her to the point of unconsciousness.

Police said the man then repeatedly stabbed the woman, before returning to his vehicle and driving away.

The pair were able to flag down a passing motorist and contact police.

The woman was taken to the Alice Springs Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

Following a police pursuit along Ilparpa Road in Alice Springs the man was arrested and charged with a number of offences, including one count of sexual intercourse without consent and unlawfully cause serious harm, and two counts of aggravated assault and armed with an offensive weapon.

He is due to face the Alice Springs Local Court today.
