Woman allegedly raped, forced into car boot and shot at by man

SES crews and a police detective search a wetlands area at Dry Creek for a firearm.

A woman was allegedly raped, forced into the boot of a car and shot at during an incident north of Adelaide last night, police have said.

The victim, in her 30s, made a triple zero call at about 8:15pm to report she was being chased by a man known to her at Dry Creek.

She told officers at the Salisbury Highway scene she had been sexually assaulted, held against her will and forced into the boot of his Ford Laser.

It is believed the sexual assault happened earlier in the night at a location in the southern suburbs, before she was driven north in the car.

The woman managed to escape the boot but the man followed her around nearby wetlands and several shots were reportedly fired in her direction.

Police said she was able to run to safety at a nearby service station and call for help, before she was treated at hospital and released a short time later.

Officers including PolAir and the STAR group surrounded the wetlands area, adjacent to the highway, and found the suspect hiding in bushes.

They returned to the scene this morning to search the area for the handgun.

A 37-year-old Craigmore man has been charged with unlawful detention and rape. He has been refused bail and is expected to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Monday.

SA Police Detective Chief Inspector Billy Thompson said the nature of the relationship between the pair was not yet clear.

"We do not believe that the couple were in a domestic relationship but they have been known to each other," he said.

"We're still looking at the dynamics of what their relationship has been in recent times."

Incident follows nearby kidnapping last week

Chief Inspector Thompson said the woman was left shaken by the ordeal but had been helping the police investigation.

"This is a horribly traumatic event for someone to go through," he said

"To be in the middle of nowhere in the dark, not knowing where you are, trying to seek help, would have been very frightening for her."

Investigators would like to speak with anyone who may have seen the red Ford Laser, registration S081AXM, around the Port River Expressway and Salisbury Highway.

The incident comes a week after another woman was allegedly kidnapped at gunpoint, assaulted and forced into the boot of a car at the nearby suburb of Para Hills.

The woman was found by police after she called triple zero from inside the boot, and was treated for injuries including a fractured eye socket.

Four people known to the victim are facing charges including kidnapping, aggravated threats to kill and aggravated assault causing harm over the incident.
