Woman allegedly dragged across NT road

A woman has been flown to Royal Adelaide Hospital after an alleged assault in Alice Springs. (AAP)

A woman has suffered serious spinal injuries after a man allegedly dragged her onto a busy road in Alice Springs and assaulted her.

The alleged domestic violence incident happened on Gap Road about 9.40pm on Wednesday, Northern Territory police said.

The 27-year-old woman was taken to the Alice Springs Hospital before being flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment.

Bystanders intervened and stopped the man from assaulting the woman further before the he fled the area, a police spokesman said.

Investigators believe the man and woman were known to each other.

Detectives have called for witnesses or people with dash-cam or CCTV footage to contact them.
