Woman airlifted after being hit by car on major city centre road as two arrested

A woman was airlifted to hospital after being hit by a car on major city centre road.

At around 2.55pm today officers were called to a report of a crash involving a red Vauxhall and a woman on Brownlow Hill in the city centre.

The driver and a passenger of the red Vauxhall remained at the scene.

The woman in her 60s was taken to hospital via air ambulance. It is unclear the severity of her injuries.

A 31-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man from Liverpool have been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

They were taken to a police station in Merseyside where they are currently in custody.

Photos of the scene showed seven police cars lining the road along with a fire engine and ambulance crews.

A large police cordon is in place outside the University of Liverpool while emergency services work at the scene.

Great Newton Street and the area between Clarence Street and Mount Pleasant is currently closed whilst officers continue their enquiries.

Mersey Travel said on Sunday no buses will be operating in the area until the road has reopened and diversions are currently in place.

They tweeted: "Due to a Road Traffic Collision on Brownlow Hill, no buses will be serving here until the road has reopened. Arriva will be diverting all services via Clarence St."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "At around 2.55pm today (Sunday, January 30) officers were called to a report of a collision involving a red Vauxhall and a woman on Brownlow Hill in Liverpool.

"The driver and passenger of the red Vauxhall remained at the scene

"The woman in her 60s was taken to hospital via air ambulance.

"A 31-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man from Liverpool have been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

"They were taken to a police station in Merseyside where they are currently in custody.
