Woman airflifted to hospital by coastguard helicopter after fall on remote moorland

A huge rescue operation was launched after a woman was injured in a fall on Saddleworth Moor.

Poor weather conditions meant the North West Air Ambulance was unable to land, so Oldham Mountain Rescue Team volunteers called in the Maritime and Coastguard Agency helicopter.

The 23-year-old year woman was airlifted to hospital for treatment on her injured ankle.

Some 22 volunteers were involved in the three and a half hour rescue operation.

A post on the Oldham Mountain Rescue Team Facebook page said: "At 15:41hrs on Saturday, we received a request from Greater Manchester Police for assistance with the location and evacuation of a 23-year-old female who had fallen and injured her ankle somewhere in the Dovestones area, although her exact whereabouts was unknown.

"Fortunately, we were able to use PhoneFind technology to accurately pinpoint the casualty and get Team members moving.

"We soon had a medic and kit at the cas (casualty) site and were able to assess and treat the cas.

"Due to the potentially long and difficult carry off, the North West Air Ambulance was requested to airlift the casualty.

"Unfortunately, they could not land due to the deteriorating weather conditions and had to abort, so the larger maritime and Coastguard Agency helicopter was allocated.

"MCA arrived just as light was failing and we were able to hot load the stretcher for onward transport to hospital. All that was then left was to escort the casualty’s companion off the hill to safety."
