A woman aged 74 has become the oldest mum in the world – after giving birth to twin daughters.

Erramatti Mangayamma and her 80-year-old husband, Rajarao, married in 1962 and gave up dreams of having a child decades ago.

New mum Erramatti told The Times of India: “People looked at me with accusing eyes as if I had committed a sin.

“Neighbours would call me ‘godralu’ (a curse word for a childless woman). However, my husband stood by me like a rock.”

Rajarao, a farmer, said: “We are the happiest couple on earth today. We have our own children.”

Dr Sanakkayala Umasankar said of his patient: “As she is old, she cannot release eggs so we got eggs from a donor and collected sperm from her husband.

“Luckily, she conceived in the first cycle itself. There were no health complications.

“Both the babies are healthy.”
