Woman accused of ripping off date arrested, Conn. police say

HARTFORD, Conn. _ A woman who police said bilked a man on their first _ and most likely last _ date faces theft charges.

Katherine Stonick, 27, of New Haven was arrested Friday on charges of illegal use of a credit card and sixth-degree larceny, police said. She is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Norwalk later this month.

According to police, Stonick _ who told her date her name was "Sophie" _ went out to dinner with the man at Finalmente Trattoria on Aug. 17. The man used a credit card to pay the bill.

Stonick excused herself from the table, purportedly to use the restroom, and asked the manager to add a $300 gift card on the man's credit card, police said.

They left the restaurant, and Stonick returned twice over the next two days to use the gift card, they said.

When the man realized what had happened, he went to the police and provided "Sophie's" license plate number. Investigators learned the woman's real name and set up a photo lineup, police said.

The man was able to identify her as the woman with whom he had gone out on a date, they said.
