Woman accused of leaving Scots tot disabled after running him down and driving over him

A woman is facing trial accused of leaving a two-year-old boy disabled after allegedly driving over him.

Dee Anne Butler denies she left the toddler badly hurt and permanently impaired by dangerous driving.

Butler, 40, is said to have struck the child at Loanhead Farm, in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, last summer.

She is charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, in breach of Section 1A of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

Prosecutors at Paisley Sheriff Court yesterday claimed she committed the offence on June 19, 2020, and "in the knowledge that children often played in the roadway there [did] fail to maintain adequate observations when performing a turn on the road".

The charge states she did "fail to notice" the boy, causing her to "collide with said child, fail to stop, [and] continue to drive over said child to his severe injury and permanent impairment".

Butler, of Lochwinnoch, was not present in court to face the charge.

Solcitor Louise Arrol pleaded not guilty on her behalf and asked for a further pre-trial hearing to take place.

Sheriff Mark Thorley then adjourned the case, which is due to go to trial next month.
