A WOMAN who was allegedly speeding and under the influence of drugs when she hit and killed 47-year-old Anne Bourke as she crossed Main Road at Heddon Greta in February has had her bail varied so she can move to a remote part of the Northern Territory.
After a lengthy investigation into the death of Ms Bourke, Katie Holmes, 27, was arrested on June 29 and charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, driving with an illicit drug in her system and exceeding the speed limit by more than 20km/h.
She was granted bail in Toronto Local Court on a number of conditions and the matter was adjourned until August. But Ms Holmes' matter was re-listed on Friday, when she applied to have her bail varied to live in Roper Bar in the Northern Territory, a remote community 600 kilometres from Darwin. In granting the variation, Magistrate Bruce Williams said Ms Holmes had "come back of her own volition from Queensland" to face the driving charges.
Mr Williams ordered that Ms Holmes report to Ngukurr Police Station once a week, live in Roper Bar, not consume alcohol or drugs, not drive a car and Ms Holmes and her partner had to deposit a total of $4000 as a surety.
Police said Ms Bourke was walking across Main Road about 11pm on February 15 when she was hit by a car heading south. The driver stopped to assist, police said.
